The lives and afterlives of a Ukrainian songwriter: Volodymyr Ivasiuk and the crisis of Soviet order

This talk explores the life and posthumous commemoration of the pop musician Volodymyr Ivasiuk.
Although Ivasiuk promoted his Ukrainian-language music on Soviet radio and television in the 1970s, he turned into a symbol of Ukrainian resistance to Soviet rule after his premature death. I will argue that this anti-Soviet turn in Ukrainian popular culture was a rebellion against state-sponsored emotional norms.

Ukraine: Resisting Cultural Erasure - This short seminar series celebrates Ukrainian culture and reflects on resistance to cultural erasure by artists, filmmakers, musicians, and others. It has been put together to mark the month of February, when on the 24.02.2022 Russia escalated its war on Ukraine to a full-scale invasion.
