Talks to mark the publication of the Bodleian book Georgia: a Cultural Journey through the Wardrop Collection by Nikoloz Aleksidze.

2-2.45pm: Nikoloz Aleksidze will talk about the Bodleian's Wardrop collection and the making of the book.

2.45-3.30pm: Beka Kobakhidze The long road to Independence: the Bodleian's 'Petition of the Georgian People' and the struggle for Georgian National Liberty.

Dr Kobakhidze will describe the significance of the 'Petition of the Georgian People' to the 1907 Hague Convention that was donated by Sir Oliver Wardrop to the library in 1920. This 29 page petition details an critical moment in Georgia’s struggle for independence and is the first documented instance of Georgians from all backgrounds coming together to petition the international community with the aim of upholding their political autonomy.

3.30-4.15pm: Lyn Coffin Wrestling the Panther.

The world is glutted with comic book movies. Rustaveli's The Knight in the Panther Skin, currently on display in the Treasures Gallery, is a timeless antidote. Written in the 12th century, the exciting story - wise but never boring - presents us with the greatest adventure there is: believable human beings who grow into love searching for truth and happiness in a dangerous world. In this epic tale, Arabian knight Avtandil helps Tariel, rightful heir to India's throne, find his beloved Nestan, who's been kidnapped. The two knights defy kings, have an amorous escapade or two, cross seas and fight many battles to unite the lovers.
