What does art during the war look like? How can we talk about trauma and resistance? Documentary and archival turns, as well as attention to topics of war, loss, and displacement in Ukrainian art came as a response to the Russian annexation of Crimea and the military escalation in eastern Ukraine in 2014. The Russian full-scale invasion in February 2022 renewed artists’ interest in global and local history, this time with a strong connection to language and meanings of the words. What do we mean by “history”? What do we mean by “archiving”? In her lecture, researcher of contemporary art Kateryna Iakovlenko will reflect on how we can rediscover language through art and what is the relation between art and civil resistance in the fight against the aggressor.
