Dr.Nino Kavtaria is the head of Art History Department at K.Kekelidze Georgian National Center of Manuscripts. She completed her PhD in 2004 with a thesis dedicated to the illuminated Georgian manuscripts illustrated at the Georgian scriptoria of the Black Mountain (Antioch, historical Syria, now in Turkey). Her research interests focuses on the study of Georgian illuminated manuscripts of the IX-XVIII cc, their iconographic-stylistic and artistic features, and the interrelation and influence Byzantine, East Christian, Islamic and west European cultures on the Georgian illustrated manuscripts. She also received fellowships for several research projects on the art of Georgian Book at Warburg Institute, Doaks, Athens University (IKY), CEU, DAAD, Koç university, Erasmus+.
She organized and participated in the creation of a complete database of miniatures included in the Georgian illustrated manuscripts preserved in the depositories both in Georgia and abroad. Nino Kavtaria actively participates in international and local conferences; she is one of the organizers of the International conference “Georgia –Byzantium-Christian East,” which is held every two years since 2017 at the Georgian National Center of Manuscripts.
Her current research is dedicated to study and investigate Illustrations of “The Knight in the Panther’s Skin” by Shota Rustaveli from Oliver and Marjory Wardrops Collection of the Bodleian Library, University of Oxford.
