Arystanbek Akylbay is a PhD candidate in Oriental studies at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Kazakhstan. Arystanbek holds a master’s degree in China Studies from Shanghai International Studies University. He was a visiting fellow at the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University from March to July 2023. Arystanbek was also a visiting researcher at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore and the Centre for Public Administration at Nanyang Technological University in May-June 2024. His research interest focuses on investigating the interrelation between political institutions and economic development with a regional focus on Singapore, Kazakhstan and China. While at the University of Oxford, he studies under Professor Michael Rochlitz’s supervision.
