Anđela Mićanović is a doctoral researcher in political science at the University of Luxembourg. Her research investigates how internal divisions within the EU and its strategic ambiguity have (un)intentionally contributed to democratic backsliding and the erosion of Europeanization in Southeast Europe. By examining the political, institutional, and geopolitical (f)actors shaping EU policymaking, her study highlights the complex interactions between fragmented EU strategies and regional political entrepreneurs who strategically exploit social polarization to consolidate power and resist democratic reforms, while also enabling the influence of external actors.
She earned her MA from Heidelberg University and her BA from the University of Montenegro, where she was recognized as the best student in social sciences. She also spent a year studying at American University in Washington, D.C. Mićanović previously served as an advisor to the Vice President of the Parliament of Montenegro and worked with the United Nations. Her broad professional experience spanning policymaking, diplomacy, and public communication has deeply informed her academic work, providing her with a nuanced understanding of governance dynamics and political developments across Southeast Europe, where she has held multiple visiting research positions.
She is visiting the University of Oxford in Michaelmas Term 2025 under the supervision of Professor Dimitar Bechev, with support from the Luxembourg National Research Fund and Luxembourg Pierre Werner Foundation.
