Geoffrey Gosby began attending Georgian lessons at Oxford as an undergraduate and went on to defend his DPhil thesis, Information Structure in Georgian, in 2017, after receiving support for his postgraduate research from the Marjory Wardrop Fund.
Several of his translations from Georgian to English have been published in the years since, including The Man in the Panther’s Skin: A Condensed Prose Retelling (Artanuji Publishing, 2018), The State Controller’s Office of the Democratic Republic of Georgia (The State Audit Office of Georgia, 2020), and Life in Soviet Georgia: 70 Stories (Artanuji Publishing, 2021).
As a participant in the Oxford Georgian Translation Project he has translated Aka Morchiladze’s play Melted Chocolate Station for and assisted with the editing of Unlocking the Door (Cezanne, 2017), contributed to the translation of Goderdzi Chokheli’s Human Sadness, and, more recently, contributed to the translation of Stories from Saba: Selected Tales from The Book of Wisdom and Lies (Cezanne, 2023) and begun working on a first full English translation of Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani’s Journey to Europe.
